1 John – What It Says About God

When studying a passage of Scripture, the first step is always Observation.

I’m preparing a study of 1 John, and I decided to log some of my observations for my own benefit, and hopefully yours as well.

One technique is to print out a copy of the passage and highlight the passages using different colors to point out what it says about God, what it says about obedient believers, and what it says about everyone else.

In this post, I want to catalog what John’s first letter says or implies about God:

  • Jesus is the “Word of Life”, and in Him we find eternal life
  • Jesus is the manifestation of God in human flesh
  • Jesus is light, and in Him there is no darkness
  • The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin and unrighteousness
  • Jesus takes away our sin
  • God is faithful and just
  • HeĀ forgives us our sins if we confess them
  • Jesus is our Advocate with God the Father
  • God the Father accepted Jesus’s death as sufficient payment for our sins
  • Jesus is the promised Messiah, Deliverer, Savior of the world, the True God
  • Jesus anoints us with the Holy Spirit
  • The Holy Spirit teaches us everything that is true
  • Jesus is returning to judge all of mankind according to his deeds
  • Jesus is righteous, obeying the Law of God completely and perfectly
  • The relationship between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit defines what true love is
  • God extended His love to us first as a Father to a child
  • God is pure, without sin
  • Jesus came to destroy the works of Satan; He is greater than Satan
  • Jesus laid down His life for us
  • God is a greater judge of our hearts than we are, and He knows everything
  • God commands us to obey Him
  • The Holy Spirit remains in us to teach us the truth, give us understanding, and help us obey
  • His power is greater than Satan and all who serve him
  • Jesus proved His own authenticity by baptism, death and resurrection, and the fulfilled promise of the Holy Spirit
  • God the Father’s testimony about Jesus trumps our own assessment of Him
  • God the Father testified that Jesus is His Son, and that He will only grant eternal life to those who believe in Him
  • God the Father hears our prayers and grants us everything that agrees with His will for us
  • God protects His children from the evil one and his power
  • Jesus, the Son of God, has come to give us understanding so that we may know God the Father, andĀ receive eternal life from Him through the Son
